Across the globe, millions of people rely on their air conditioning system to keep their homes cool during the summer. Without a reliable cooling system, your home can quickly turn from a relaxing environment to a hot, humid, unhealthy place to be. If your air conditioner is turning on but not blowing cold air you have a major problem.
Below are a few reasons why your air conditioner may be blowing warm or hot air into your home.
1. Thermostat Setting
The simplest way to diagnose your air conditioning issue is to check your thermostat setting. Because thermostats are generally located on a wall and easily accessible, its setting may have been accidentally changed. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is your thermostat set to “cool” instead of “heat?”
- Is your thermostat on?
- Is your thermostat set to your desired temperature?
A thermostat is easily bumped when walking around a corner, so be sure to double check your settings before moving on in your AC troubleshooting process.
2. Restricted Airflow
When airflow is restricted throughout your cooling system the amount of cool air distributed throughout your home is reduced. Additionally, restricted airflow may cause your air conditioner’s compressor to freeze up and lead to more parts of your air conditioner to malfunction.
Your air conditioning system may have restructured airflow due to:
- A dirty or clogged air filter
- Dirty AC coils
- Lack of air conditioner maintenance
3. No Electrical Connectivity
The outdoor condensing unit in your air conditioning system must always be connected to a reliable electrical source in order for it to function properly. If the incorrect amount of voltage flows to your air conditioner, it may cause your breaker to trip. When this occurs, your air conditioning system will seemingly turn on, however no cold air is available.
4. Malfunctioning Compressor
The main function of the compressor in your air conditioner is to pressurize and cool the refrigerant. If the compressor malfunctions, your entire cooling system will not function properly. Your compressor may not be working properly for a variety of reasons, including:
- Electrical failures
- Overheating
- Leaking
- And more
What To Do If Your Air Conditioner Blows Warm Air
If the air distributed throughout your home is not as cool as you think it should be, contact your local HVAC contractor. A licensed heating and cooling technician will be able to diagnose and repair your air conditioning issues and restore comfort to your home.
